Appenzeller Turf on the Jungfraujoch

Top of Europe: Joerg Abderhalden and Kilian Wenger swiss-wrestle on the glacier

On Thursday, July 4, 2013. the swiss-style show-wrestling with Kilian Wenger took place on the Junfraujoch. At 3,454 meters (11,333 feet) above sea level he confronted his challenger Joerg Abderhalden.

An original sawdust ring with two tons of sawdust was installed on the Aletsch-glacier for the show-wrestling. The Appenzeller turf by Tisca provided the ideal base for this event.

Official referees accompanied the “bad guys” to the top of Europe, where, on July 4th, 2013, the current Swiss wrestling king Kilian Wenger faced his opponent Joerg Abderhalden. Prior to their encounter the crown wrestler Matthias Glarner and the gymnastics wrestler Jonas Lengacher challenged each other.

Alphorn players, Fahnenschwinger (tossing of the Swiss flag) and Yodelers rendered the traditional ambiance on the ice. Over 30 invited guests watched the show wrestling in bright sunshine.

Among the guests were former wrestling kings such as Arnold Ehrensberger, Harry Knuesel and Silvio Ruefenacht. On the spur of the moment, the internationally known extreme climber and adventurer Reinhold Messner and his team captured scenes of the wrestling on camera. He happened to be on the Jungfraujoch for a film production.
